This School Year
by Katie K.
This School Year
This year in social studies we had a lot of time to explore, our great great (x 500 more) ancestral hominids. Homo Habilis, Erectus, Sapiens Neanderthalensis, and Sapien Sapiens galore! What also was a really big treat, we excavated the first city-states. Well, I thought that was really neat. We visited Ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. We also learned their geography, government, and trade, and then we learned how they all started to fade…
This year in language arts we learned about the parts that make up a sentence, subject verb, and noun. We also got tested really hard, on the Greek and Latin roots that we had pasted on little note cards. We also wrote a lot this year, so it probably excites some people that the end of school is near.
Science was crazy (in a good way),and no one could look lazy, when we learned about serpentinite, checkerspots, volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate tectonics.
In Math we worked on unit rates, dividing and multiplying fractions, textbooks, areas and perimeters, and variable tiles until our journals had no more room.
I assume everybody needs a break, to not look back, and we will go straight into summer vacation, and that will be that.

All sixth graders are encouraged to wear a toga
(over shorts and t-shirts)to school on Wednesday.
The Government group has made laurel wreaths for all the students for all students to wear on Wednesday.
One Way to Tie a Toga
You need to wear a t-shirt and shorts underneath.
The picture below has a different shape of material, but the idea is the same.
- Toga cloth should be long and narrow
- Pin one end of it to your waist
- Wrap it around you at least once (should hang to about the knees)
- Pin it at the waist again, on the right or left side
- Throw the rest over one shoulder
- Around the back
- Pin it at the waist again

Thank You to Our Parent Drivers and Chaperons!
We had a wonderful trip to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum! Thank you to our parent drivers and chaperons. We could not do ths without our help. The students traveled through ancient Egypt exploring the many different galleries. We learned of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet and the pharaoh Amenhotep IV (he brought monotheism to the Egyptians and changed the style of their art) We looked at the daily life of the ancient Egyptians, but perhaps the most exciting was the afterlife gallery. Here we saw mummies, Sarcophagi, and many of the items placed within the tomb to be sent with the deceased into their afterlife. It was a wonderful, informative trip, and this was a great complement to our earlier studies of Ancient Egypt.

After- School Homework Club Update
We run an after-school homework club on Monday – Thursday (with the exception of minimum day Wednesdays). This after-school opportunity is for sixth graders and their siblings. Siblings are welcome as long as the sixth grader is in the room, and the sibling(s) have homework to complete.
We love offering this opportunity to provide the students with extra help and time to complete their homework; however, recently we are feeling as though this time has become a babysitting service. We have many students wondering in after 3:00 to sit, hang out, and visit with their friends.
We expect that students who plan on attending homework club arrive no later than 2:50 and get themselves to work. Students are often hungry at this time, so they are welcome to eat a small, healthy snack. They may not use the computers while they are eating or dinking.
Students are not dismissed from the room before 3:25 unless a parent picks them up in the classroom. Students also need to be promptly picked up at 3:25 – we cannot leave them hanging out on the playground waiting for rides.
We appreciate your help in making this a productive time for all students. We will be sending home a hard copy of these guidelines after Winter Break to be signed by both parents and students that wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

Looking for Three Wins!
In conjunction with the middle school, the sixth graders are participating in an exercise called Three Wins. The challenge is to write down three things that go well everyday for a week. This is a way of focusing our energy on the positive and noticing when things are working in our lives. Parents are invited to participate with us as well :) Let's see what it feels like to really notice the good stuff ~ Hope you join in the fun!
We had a great time on Friday playing
board games with our third grade buddies!

Parent Internet Awareness
Just a reminder to parents to be mindful of their child's use of social media. This week a site popped up called "CSMH6thgradeMatchmaking" on Instagram. It has been closed down. Students need to be using technology in a respectful and appropriate manner. Please have a conversation with your son or daughter about the use of technology.
Help Needed!
We need a parent to help organize field trips. We are in the process of trying to organize an adventure to the Rosicrucian Museum, but find it difficult to make phone calls during school hours. If you can help out with this need, please contact Mrs. Daprile.
A Note from Mrs. Mosher:
I want to thank all of my students and families for taking such good care of me with all the Christmas gifts and treats. I was absolutely spoiled rotten with gift cards, handmade goodies, jewelry, pedicure, handmade cards, and most special - lots of hugs! Also, there is a "Secret Santa" out there that did some shopping for me at the book fair - I am loving my book on Egyptian art.
I am looking forward to the second half of the school year with lots of interesting projects in art.
Thanks again for all your care and support!

Meet the new addition to the Daprile home. She is an eight week old Bernese Mountain Dog and already 20 pounds! We have not yet decided on a permanent name. All six kids have been coming up with a lot of possible names, and we are trying to come to a consensus. Hopefully we will decide soon.
