Classroom Updates
Language Arts
This week we started reading our first classroom novel, Boy of the Painted Cave by Justin Denzel. This is the story of Tao, a fourteen year old boy, who longs to be a cave painter. I always encourage parents to have book talks with their child. Having students articulate what is happening in the story and wondering why, will further strengthen their reading comprehension and analysis. To help you get started, I have provided you a few questions below:
Chapter 1:
Why is Tao unable to become the Chosen One?
Who is Kala, and why dd she take care of Tao?
How did Volt punish Tao? Do you think it was fair? Why or why not?

Social Studies
This week we started with our text book, History Alive - The Ancient World. With Unit One, we are investigating early humans and the rise of civilization. We are just getting started. Next week the students will take on the role of a social scientist and go spelunking in search of artifacts to examine. Monday is our cave exploration day. Please remember to bring a small flashlight if you have one. We will be sharing these to help us in our spelunking,
We will also be setting up our online accounts of the TCI Ancient Civilization textbook next week. Our first chapter test will be next Friday, September 2. Students will be preparing for this test in class; however, they should also be reviewing the text on the own the second half of the week.

Math
This week we completed our TenMarks assessments and will start working with individually leveled work next week. We also had a number talk to help us determine different patterns between numbers. We constructed a histogram (a type of bar graph) concerning the birthdays in our class and looked closely at the data. Lastly, we talked about math in the real world and completed a homework assignment that gave us many opportunities to see math in our daily lives.
Remember- MATH IS POWER!

Science
This week we started to develop our understanding of how scientists observe the world around them. We conducted and observational experiment and began to question and wonder the same way a scientist would. We also worked on an engineering challenge in teams to help us learn how to work on difficult and complex challenges as a group.

Spanish
I want to express how fortunate I am to have your children for Spanish class for three consecutive years. It was been a great experience and they have come a long way with them acquiring a new language.
We are starting the year learning about Hispanic Heritage Month. The class is working on a poster about an assigned country in Central America and some of South America. They are concentrating on traditions, culture, contributions, Independence, and honor for their assigned country.
For the next couple of weeks we will be reviewing everything we learned last year and move quickly into learning and practicing more Spanish in class. I am looking forward to a great year ahead.

A Note From the ARt Room
Dear Parents,
My name is Kelley Brown and I am in my 5th year at CSMH. I will teaching 4th thru 8th grade art to your children. My most exciting news to share is that for the first time ever we have a DESIGNATED ART ROOM!! Please feel free to stop by room #123 (Mrs. Swope’s old room) and check it out. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share the process of “creating masterpieces” with your children. As many of you know my emphasis in art is always about participation, positive engagement, and enjoying the process. I work very hard to provide interesting projects that appeal to most students. I am so happy to be reunited with many students whom I haven’t taught since third grade and have been looking forward to joining the upper grades for quite some time.
My two youngest children are in the 5th and 6th grade at CSMH so I am fortunate to get real time critiques of my art project choices. ;) I also have a sophomore and senior at Sobrato High School.
Mrs. Lehrfield will be taking over the K-3rd grade art classes and we will be working together very closely to plan an exciting curriculum for our students. We will be sharing the responsibility of teaching the 6th grade group. I will be in charge of the Romans and she will have the Greeks and the Egyptians. Art and music electives will be taught in a semester format this year with 4th- 8th graders receiving art twice a week for 40-45 minutes for one semester. Second semester they will switch to music and drama. Fifth graders will start with music and drama.
Thank you so much to those of you who have contributed to the supply fund for our school. I have purchased many art supplies already but with more than 600 students we always run out… If anyone has any items that you think might be of interest or use in art please email me and I will let you know if we can use the item. Those of you interested in volunteering please contact me. I can always use a helping hand and you do not need to commit to every week.
I look forward to a great year of art with your child. Please email me with any questions or concerns. [email protected]
All the best,
Kelley Brown
