The year has started of with lots and lots of rain! It was wonderful to see our students walking back into the classrooms this week. We hope that everyone had a restful break and are ready to tackle a new year and welcome all that this year will bring.
Thank You!
Thank you so much for all of the holiday gifts that we received! We were showered with many wonderful gift cards and presents from our students and their families! Over break we were able to enjoy outings to restaurants, get coffee, and even do a bit of shopping! Ms. Daprile was thrilled to be able to buy new luggage at T.J. Maxx - something that she has wanted for a very long time. Every time she uses her new teal set, she will be thinking of her wonderful 2016/17 sixth grade students! We both thank you for all that you do for us.
Breakfast and Book CLub
Last month our Breakfast and Book Club met to discuss the Westing Game a novel of mystery, murder, and intrigue. I always so enjoy listening to the students discuss their favorite characters and the twists and turns of the lot. This last book included a few surprises along the way. As always the students enjoyed their breakfast of pancakes, fruit, yogurt, sausage, muffins, and juice.
Our next book to read is called Bud, Not Buddy and is one of my all-time favorites! This award winning novel by Christopher Paul Curtis tells the story of orphaned Bud running away from his cruel foster family to find his father. His hunt is based on a flyer his mother held dear - a flyer about a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our meeting for this discussion will be Tuesday, February 7 at 7:20 a.m.
Classroom Updates
Humanities
This week has been devoted to a lot of social studies as we have learned about the different classes in ancient Egyptian society and what daily life was like. The students worked in small groups writing, rehearsing, and then presenting dramatizations complete with props to show their classmates what life was like for a particular group of ancient Egyptians.
We will be taking the Reading Challenge Test in class on Thursday, January 19. This open book test is on chapter nine, Daily Life of Ancient Egypt. Completed Chapter 9 Notebook Pages (classwork) is also due on Thursday
We have also learned 10 more Greek and Latin Roots. The quiz on the Athena set will be Wednesday, January 18. The completed Athena packet (classwork) is also due on Wednesday.
In tech the students continue to fine tune their robots and will begin shooting the film for their movies next week. Next week we will also be working on the beginnings of our persuasive essays.

Math and Science
This week in math we have started a new unit on integers. We learned about the value of negative numbers and how to navigate a number line with integers. Next week, we will work on adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers.
In science, we began our new unit on convection and density. In class, we layered liquids of different densities and developed an understanding of the correlation between density and weight. Next week we will continue to investigate with the concepts of density and mass.
