Life keeps on Marching Forward in 6th grade
The first semester has come to a close. It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the school year! The students have been busy completing a TenMarks assessment as well as their mid-year DRA reading assessment. We have been busy working on report cards. The school is moving into a more narrative reporting system. So in addition to a letter grade, we are attempting to really fill you in on where your child is academically, developmentally, and socially. We will be sharing with you the strengths we perceive in your child as well as any goals that we want to focus on this second semester.
As of now, the report cards will be mailed out next Wednesday. As always, if you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Design our Team T-shirt!
We also want the students to help us design this year's t-shirt for our Relay for Life team. How awesome to have your design on everyone's shirt! We are really looking for 100% participation from our 6th graders this year. Let's make it happen.
Prior InforMation
In case you missed it - from Mary's email:
It has become a tradition at CSMH that the 6th Grade class participate in Relay for Life. For those who don’t know, RFL is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society involving team fundraising and a 24 hour walk. This year RFL will be held at Community Park on May 20-21. Our goal is to have 100% of the 6th graders registered on our team and participate in some way.
To register your child please go to the Morgan Hill RFL website at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=78915 and select join a team. Our team name is CSMH Cheetahs.
Registering and participating does not mean that you are committed to participating for the entire 24-hour event. We realize that everyone has very busy schedules. When we get closer to the event, families will have a better idea of time constraints and can choose their own event participation level.
Our main focus is raising money as a class for cancer.
Our hope is that every 6th grader will participate in fundraising. While families can participate in individual fundraising, this is not required. The majority of the fundraising will be in organized group events such as a classroom fundraising contest and Safeway solicitations. Our first fundraiser will be February 2 during Family Bingo Night. The 6th graders will be selling candy, nachos, drinks and ink markers for bingo cards. If you or your 6th grader would like to volunteer during this event, please contact Vanessa Sutter at [email protected].
There are many tasks associated with RFL: poster making, t-shirt design, food for the event, chaperones, organizing fundraisers, scheduling walkers.

Classroom Updates
Breakfast and Book Club
Our next book to read is called Bud, Not Buddy and is one of my all-time favorites! This award winning novel by Christopher Paul Curtis tells the story of orphaned Bud running away from his cruel foster family to find his father. His hunt is based on a flyer his mother held dear - a flyer about a band in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our meeting for this discussion will be Tuesday, February 7 at 7:20 a.m.

Humanities
We have spent the last week working on writing our persuasive/argumentative essays. The students have chosen a topic that they feel is worth standing up for and convincing others to take their advice.
We are currently in the drafting stages, but this week we have worked through the introduction paragraph, three reason paragraphs and a rebuttal. The students have conducted research and are including expert supports to their arguments. I am very pleased with how hard the students are working and the results, thus far, of their essays.
Next week we will be working on the concluding paragraphs with their call to action. We should be wrapping up this writing next week and returning to Ancient Egypt and starting our next classroom novel.

Monday Muffins
The plan is for Ms. Daprile to make muffins this weekend for all the 6th graders to fulfill the chosen election promise from our Electoral College Project. Please let me know if I need to be aware of food allergies. Since I have a child with EoE, I am well versed in food allergies.
