Thank you for all of the wonderful books that were purchased at the book fair and are now living happily in our classroom LIBRARIES!
Here is just a small sampling of the 25+ books that we received. Many are already checked out for reading by the students and ten copies of The Enemy Above are part of our next Literature Circles.

Breakfast and Books
On Tuesday we enjoyed a fun breakfast while chatting about The Phantom Tollbooth. Ten students had a lively discussion talking about the characters, the literal take on many phrases, what it would be like to grow down instead of up, and what is more important - letters or numbers.
Our next Breakfast and Book Club meeting will be Tuesday, November 15 and the book will be Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This award winning book is the first book in the Shadow Children sequence. All 6th graders are welcome to join us. I have books available for the students in my classroom.
From the back of the book:
"Luke has never been to school. He’s never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend’s house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend.
Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He’s lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family’s farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.
Then, one day Luke sees a girl’s face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he’s met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows–does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?
Trunk or Treat!
Carole Brum has graciously offered to host a trunk on behalf of the 6th graders for next Thursday's school wide Trunk or Treat. The theme of the hatchback trunk will "Aloha". If you would like to help host that evening or can help provide candy please contact Carole Brum. If you do not have Carole's email, please email Ms. Daprile to have your message forwarded.
Classroom Updates
Language Arts and Social Studies
We had a very busy week in room 105!
We learned about the rise of the Sumerian City-States and how geography affected the growth and success of these early villages and towns. We finished the week with taking the Chapter Four online reading challenge. This was an open book test.
We prepared for and conducted our first Socratic Seminar. The students did a fantastic job leading and partaking in a group discussion sharing their thoughts and opinions and backing up their thinking with examples and evidence from the text. This was the first of four Socratic Seminars that we hold throughout the school year. The students really impressed me!
One class was able to get into groups to begin our Cave Building Project. The other two classes will start on Monday. As a whole class we will be exploring the question, "How does Boy of the Painted Cave fit the monomyth of the Hero’s Journey?"
They will be building both connections and a cave right in the classroom. They will share their connections through cave art on the walls of the cave.
We started our first Literature Circle. Lit Circles in 6th grade consist of reading a book with a small group. The book will be read at home and discussed in the classroom. Each student has a job to complete for each meeting and these jobs each have corresponding paperwork that will also be completed at home.
More information regarding each role can be found in the drop down menu titled Literature Circles in the Language Arts tab.
There will be five meetings and the students have broken up their novels into roughly five equal sections. The meeting schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, October 25
Friday, October 28
Tuesday, November 1
Friday, November 4
Tuesday, November 8
After reading the book and completing the five book discussions, the students will be working with their groups to create a video shot via a robot! This is a joint project with Mr. Olson and Ms. Daprile. The students are currently learning how to code and with their code they will be directing a robot with a camera to travel a preset line. This line will take the robot in and around scenes, created by the students, of their novel. Like Toad's Wild Ride, the robot will be traveling in the dark and can only follow the student written code. The video will then be edited and completed with narration and music.
Wish us luck! This is a new project that Mr. Olson and Ms. Daprile are very excited about creating!
