Jupiter Grades
Today I had all sixth graders sign onto Jupiter Grades and set up their own sign-in with their student account. Jupiter Grades allows for multiple sign-ons with each account. It is important for the sixth graders to manage their assignments, and regularly checking Jupiter Grades is a helpful tool for this. I may have booted out some parents if they were set up with a student account. If any parent can no longer sign in with their password, most likely it is because you have been signing in as a student and your child has now claimed their account. If you need me to reset your password or send you the temporary password on your parent account, please email me at [email protected].
Science Camp News
The good news is that all of the Science Camp paperwork is in! Thank you for very carefully completing the multitude of forms. I had to spend very little time running around to get missing signatures and/or incomplete information. Thank You!
I have been working on the carpool list, and I currently have seats for 60 students to science camp and 55 returning from camp. No, we will not leave any students behind :) As you can see, I need to get a few more drivers for students and a few more for luggage.
I am still sorting through the insurance and drivers licence information in the office. This information needs to be updated on a yearly basis depending upon you insurance. If you know that you need to update, please do so as soon as possible with Ms. Nancy.
The trip to Camp Campbell is approximately an hour one way.

Classroom Updates
Social Studies
Earlier this week the students worked in pairs and in teams as paleoanthropoligist. They needed to put together "skull fragments" of hominid groups and match them with found artifacts. They used the cranium size as well as characteristics of the brow bone and teeth to help them make their determinations and write their hypothesis. We have finished chapter 2, Early Hominids. The students also completed an online reading challenge. They were highly encouraged to use their text books to verify their answers while taking this quiz. Their quiz scores have been entered into Jupiter Grades.
We also had a lot of fun playing the game, Hunters and Gatherers! In this game the students learned just how hard it is to survive as a hunter and gatherer! Be sure to ask them about this game.
Language Arts
We have continued reading Boy of the Painted Cave. This week we have focused on characterization. The students have named three character traits that they believe Tao possess and pulled quotes from the book that supports their choices. As they will learn his year, it is important to have evidence to support their thinking. They then wrote characterization paragraphs that focused on how Tao's character traits will influence how he deals with conflict and problems.

Spanish
We have finished learning about many famous Hispanic people. Ask you student who they did research on. We will concentrate on reviewing our conjugation of -ar, -er, and -ir verbs for the next week and a half. We will work on using these verbs correctly while we speak. The students seem to be more confident in using their Spanish language. On the last week of September, I will be sending out some information on Dia de los muertos. That will be our big project for October. The students are looking forward to this.

Math
This week in math we worked on understanding how patterns grow, various ways to organize data, and developed an understanding of the relationship between area and perimeter. We also completed our first textbook homework assignments. Next week we will begin completing Ten Marks personal assignments for homework.
Science
This week in science we learned the difference between weather and climate. We also investigated various types of climates from around the world and made observations about the plants, animals, and people who live in the various types of climates.
