Classroom Updates
MATH: It has been a busy week in room 106 setting up routines and expectations. We completed Stanford's Week of Inspirational Math. The focus of these activities and lessons were to instill important growth mindset messages that will help them feel confident, try harder all year, persist with open and difficult problems and embrace mistakes and challenges. If you would like more info about this program, please visit: www.youcubed.org/week-of-inspirational-math
Students explored Pascal's Triangle, did some creative paper folding, analyzed growing patterns, made numbers 1-20 using four 4's, and looked at visual representations of numbers.
I am looking forward to viewing 10 Things About Me projects! They should be submitted online to me before midnight! Students should be using: classroom.google.com
Next week I will be introducing Ten Marks and start reviewing 5th grade math concepts.
SCIENCE: SUSTAINABILITY was the mystery word of the week. We are starting to explore what this overarching theme means and how it applies to each of us.
Did you hear about the baby chicks we are raising in our classroom? If you would like to adopt these chicks for a weekend, please email Ms. Williams.
SPANISH:
What an exciting 2nd week of school! The students are ready to start speaking Spanish again after a long break. We finished our posters about "Mi Verano" my summer. The students presented their posters to the class. If you want to see them, they are posted on our classroom walls. Next week we will start with descriptive words in Spanish. We will work on making a doll and writing several sentences to describe it. It should be fun and we will learn many different words. The students will have a copy of all the words needed in their binder. Please encourage your child to review the commonly used phrases in class. They have a copy of these phrases in their binder as well. ¡1Hasta Luego!
Language Arts:
This week we started reading our first classroom novel, Boy of the Painted Cave by Justin Denzel. This is the story of Tao, a fourteen year old boy, who longs to be a cave painter. I always encourage parents to have book talks with their child. Having students articulate what is happening in the story and wondering why, will further strengthen their reading comprehension and analysis. To help you get started, I have provided you a few questions below:
Chapter 1:
Why is Tao unable to become the Chosen One?
Who is Kala, and why dd she take care of Tao?
How did Volt punish Tao? Do you think it was fair? Why or why not?

Social Studies: This week we started with our text book, History Alive - The Ancient World. With Unit One, we are investigating early humans and the rise of civilization. When students arrived to class on Friday, they took on the role of a social scientist and went spelunking. The students crawled through the cave in search of artifacts. After retrieving an artifact from the cave, they worked at their research station looking at details that might help them determine why these artifacts were created in the first place. This was a great hands on experience. |
