Relay for Life Updates
Fundraising: The students were all sent home last Friday with a purple labeled water bottle. The label reads: Recycle me... Silver Saves Lives. Fill me up and help finish the fight against cancer.
The students are encouraged to bring in coin filled water bottles. The coins will be tallied and rolled in class. This is an easy way for all the students to help with our fundraising! Thank you for your support.
Planning: Many students have signed up for various committees to help with Relay for Life. Ms. Rizqallah has taken the list to start setting up the committees. Stay tuned for the next steps.

Classroom Updates
SPANISH
We have finished writing up our interview comic on Pixton. The students did a great job. We will now start with our next project of writing and translating a song. The students need to do homework to make sure that the song picked is school appropriate. They will translate the song and make a power point presentation with the music in the background. Homework has also been assigned for next week. The homework is assigned in two stages. One is duolingo and the other is a handout. Check with your child about what duolingo assignments need to be completed. The handout was given on Th Jan 28 and is due on Wed. Feb 3

MATH/SCIENCE
This week variables were introduced and students worked with finding the number of tiles needed to frame a square picture given certain dimensions. Generalizations needed to be made and discussions about equivalent expressions occurred. See if your child can tell you why these expressions are equivalent:
x + 1 + x + 1 + x + 1 3(x + 1) 3x+ 3
And . . . why these expressions are NOT equivalent:
y x y x y + 5 3y + 5
In today's science lesson, we investigated how does pressure affect air, creating pressure indicators. Students applied pressure to the air-tight plastic jar and observed the affects of the "green water" in the glass jar.
REMINDER: SCIENCE ALIVE is Saturday, February 6th! This is a great opportunity for students at Gavilan College. Students need to pre-register for classes. EXTRA CREDIT is available and requirements have been handed out to students

We are coming near the end of our class novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Ask your child what is currently happening and if they have any predictions on what might happen next. We will be finished reading this novel next week. We will then begin preparing for our next Socratic Seminar. Also our next Literature Circle book is right around the corner. Yea!
We are busy researching many interesting topics. If your child does not yet have a book for their chosen topic, please get one this weekend. Each student is to have a minimum of three resources and one of the resources needs to be a book or magazine. Next week we will begin to organize our research into a piece of engaging writing.
Social Studies
All groups have presented their ancient scrolls teaching each other about the four historical leaders of Judaism: Abraham, Moses, and Kings David and Solomon. This week we have started to look at the four central teachings of Judaism:
