Last night we had a fiesta, and then we ended the evening at the campfire where we learned about "the sand people." This morning the campers woke up at 7 and enjoyed a breakfast of eggs, sausage, fruit, oatmeal and muffins. Half of the field groups took off for a picnic hike while the others explored activities close by . . . swimming, the stream, the garden and cabin time. Tonight we feasted on a turkey dinner, and our students are now in their cabins getting ready for a night hike! Thank you for all your support and help getting us here . . . this has truly been an incredible experience for all of us!
We have arrived! Thank you to all of our parent drivers: we could not have done this without you. The students are settling in nicely. They enjoyed a lunch of pizza and salad before they headed out on an afternoon hike. **Important ** If you are one of our Friday drivers, please arrive at Camp Campbell at noon. This will allow us the time we need to load the students and their belongings into the cars and be ready for a 12:30 p.m. departure. We will arrive at school approximately 1:30 p.m. The students will not be eating lunch here at camp on Friday. So most likely they will be returning to school very, very hungry! Please drop off a bagged lunch in the office on Friday morning if they plan on staying at school until 2:45. You are free to pick them up early at 1:30 if that fits your schedule. Just a few quick snapshots...
CAMP CAMPBELL HERE WE COME! We will be leaving school at 8:30 and arriving at camp around 9:45ish. We are asking students to walk all their belongings to the sixth grade classrooms. At 8:30 our drivers will pull up to the front curb of our school and we will load luggage and students. We will be traveling in a caravan. A few reminders:

The Sixth Grade Crazy QuiltThe quilt is coming along really nicely! the kids have done a fantastic job sewing their individual squares and decorating them with a patch. Christie Thomas has been spending her evenings piecing the front of the quilt together, so that it is all prepped and ready for the quilt lady to run our creation through the quilting machine.
The cost of the quilt has run us $183. 46. I budgeted $180.00 for the quilt, so I was really close in estimating the cost. I was trying to keep the cost to $3.00 per family. However, so far I have only collected $107.00 from the students. If you have not sent in your money please do so ASAP. I need to reimburse Christie Jo $51.68, reimburse myself $71.78, and pay the quilt lady $60.00. We really appreciate any further donations. Auction CreationThe students are doing an amazing job sewing their individual quilt patches! I am very excited to see how the final product turns out - I am sure that it will be beautiful! Next week the students will be able to embellish their square and truly make it "theirs". To do this they are invited to bring in one small patches (from Jo-Ann's, Hobby Lobby, Micheal's) representing them. They might choose a patch of a basketball, dance, swimming, math, pencil etc. Something they think represents themselves. For students that are unable to bring in a patch, I have a collection of buttons that they may choose from to personalize their square. Also, many students have brought in $3.00, but we still need to collect more. The money is covering the cost of supplies: material, thread, needles; and the cost of having it professionally finished. If you have not done so, please send in $3.00. thank you! Thank you to Ruth Huffman and Kim Mayes or all of the help and hours that they have spent aiding us in completing this quilt project. More Help Needed...We will be sewing again Monday afternoon from 12:40 - 2:45 in room #5. If you can help, please come by! It mostly is threading needles and helping iron. Easy-Peasy. We just need a few more hands on deck to help keep the kids moving forward. BUDDY TIMETime with our third grade buddies today included teaching them the game "What's My Number?" and TOP IT. Classroom UpdatesLanguage Arts: The students have continued reading Boy of the Painted Cave. We are looking at character traits of Tao and finding passages in the book that serve as evidence to support our thinking. We are also looking more at the different parts of speech and how words are used in writing. Prepositions were introduced this week. Many students need more review of this concept in order to successfully identify propositions and prepositional phrases in writing. There are grammar games and videos posted on the grammar page found under the Language Arts Tab. Reviewing this will be helpful. Social Studies: The students worked their way through Chapter 2 of our text book looking at the five groups of hominids (early man). They then completed a skull activity where they built a skull from found "bone fragments". Combining the rebuilt skulls with found artifacts they were then able to place their findings into a spectrum from earliest man to later man. The students were really able to use their resources and think critically about how to make this work. They did an excellent job presenting their findings to the class. Math: Students have completed a fifth grade review benchmark assessment and have started becoming familiar with their College Preparatory Math book. Each student has been given an electronic account that allows them to go online to complete homework without their physical math book. This account and password is on a sticker in their math journal. So, in reality, students do not need to bring their math books home to complete their homework BUT they do need to bring home their math journal! Please see the MATH tab on this website for a quick link to the CPM website! Students have a TenMarks assignment due tomorrow, Saturday, September 13th. it is called "Finding the Area of a Composite Figure". To get full credit student must score a 70% or better OR if their score falls below 70% they can complete the AMPLIFIER activities to receive full points. What do you think? A family math challenge . . . Listen to the following call from a frustrated consumer trying to clarify his phone bill charges. Is there a difference between 0.002 dollars and 0.002 cents? What do you think? How much money does this customer truly owe Verizon? Please comment below on what your family thinks about this call and how much does this customer owe?
Camp Campbell Outdoor Science School forms are due MONDAY! A link to forms (in case you have misplaced yours) can be found under our Field Trips tab found under Home. Thank you for attending Back-to-School night! We really enjoyed meeting you, and we hope that you found the meeting to be helpful in understanding sixth grade. Yes, we covered a lot of information. Combining Back-to-School night with the Science Camp meeting made it a double whammy. As we said, below is the Power Point presentation that we used. It contains the links that we highlighted. Also, please spend some time exploring the many tabs on our website as you will then see where we put information that you may need in the future e.g. homework policies, study guides, and field trips. AUction Creation Ms. Daprile and Mrs. Mosher are very excited to be working with the students to help them sew a crazy quilt for our sixth grade auction creation. Hand sewing will begin in the classroom next week! The quilt will be in colors to represent Carter School: blue, burgundy, and gray. We are lucky to have had some material donated for the class to use. Thank you, Mrs. Wilson, for the donation! However, we will still need to purchase a few more supplies as well as we are paying to have the quilt professionally finished (bound and quilted). To help us with the cost, we are asking every family to please make a $3 donation. Please have your child bring $3 to school on Monday. Stay tuned for pictures of the quilt pieces - they are bound to be beautiful! Buddies began! Every Friday afternoon 6th graders and third graders will meet in buddy teams to participate in some learning activity. Today students interviewed each other! And now the Back-to-School Night Power Point presentation... And a HUGE Thank You to all of the parents that signed up to help us throughout the year with our many activities. We will be contacting you shortly. Classroom Updates:Math: We are finishing up our review of 5th grade concepts in Math. Students will be taking a benchmark assessment early next week. Students have a TenMarks assignment due tomorrow. They have had a week to complete an assignment focusing on Estimating and Rounding Decimals. Students will receive full credit for completing this work on time. In the future, students will receive full credit if they achieve a 70% or better. If they do not achieve this grade (70%), they can still receive full credit if they complete the AMPLIFIER problems that will be assigned to them once completing the assignment. I will post a new assignment on Monday that students will need to complete by Saturday morning! Social Studies: This week the students had another chance to work as social scientists. Working in groups, they were given the following scenario: They came upon a deserted campsite and decided to sift through the garbage to learn more about the people that had camped there. Ask your child what information they were able to determine based on the evidence they were given. All groups did a wonderful job presenting their findings. They definitely have been honing their detective skills this week. The students took their first social studies test, this was on chapter one. They also turned in their notebook pages and their study guides. Notebook papers reflect work and hands-on activities that we did in class. The study guides were also completed in class working with partners. Routinely, study guides and notebook chapter pages are always due on test day. That being said, there will not be study guides and/or a test for every chapter. I do mix it up, depending on the activity that we complete with each chapter. All work that is assigned is recorded in Jupiter Grades with the due dates. There will not be any surprises. Language Arts: We have continued reading Boy of the Painted Cave. This week we have worked on our summarizing and paragraphing skills. Comment below to answer one of the following questions: 1. How did Kala know that Tao had been hunting in the slough? 2. Now that Tao understands his mother and the strength that she had, what does he plan on doing next? Remember first names only!
