Field Trip on Tuesday to Intel Museum
Just a reminder that our sixth graders will be traveling to Santa Clara to visit the Intel Museum. Students will be leaving campus at 8:15 (Hurricanes) or 10:30 (Tornadoes). Both groups will need to bring a healthy snack to eat before or after their presentations. Tornadoes will be eating an early lunch because the second presentation begins at 11:30.
Buddies Go On A Scavenger Hunt!
A Kindness Explosion Has Begun
On Wednesday, the students attended an very moving and powerful assembly on kindness. We heard stories of how one pair of shoes can make a huge difference to an orphaned child living in Africa. Brian Williams, our visiting speaker, has challenged our students to a kindness campaign. This is 15 days of making a point to be kind, keeping a kindness journal, and helping our school collectively gather 1,500 pairs of shoes to be donated to those in need.
Smarter Balanced Test Scores Coming Home with Your Child TODAY!
Sixth graders will be bringing home a sealed envelope that contains scores of CAASP tests administered at the end of last school year. We are asking every parent to sign and return the "ticket" stapled to the envelope so that we can ensure you have received this document. Please make sure to read the information included in this envelope!
Our Auction Creation
The sixth graders have begun painting our ceramic dinnerware. The pieces are beautiful! they still have some finishing touches to add, the they will glaze their pieces before firing in the kiln. Thank you to Paula Kerr, Colleen Algers, Lisa Pullen, Tara Carlson, and Marla Hatch for helping us with this project.
Once the pieces are fired the colors will be transformed into beautiful fall colors. Stay tuned for pictures of the finished project.
Classroom Updates
Language Arts
The student have een busy with reading Boy of the Painted Cave. the students are really enjoying this clas novel! Students turned in their first Literature Response Writing this last Tuesday. Their second response writing will be due next Tuesday.
Social Studies
We are learning how the development of agriculture and domesticating animals led to huge advancements t early civilizations. The students have started working on a comic book titled, The Amazing Adventures of Neolithic Nel and Neolithic Nick. There will be a chapter test on Chapter three From Hunter and Gatherers to Farmers next Thursday in class.
Math/Science
Students are required to complete a weekly classroom assignment in TenMarks. These assignments are based on 5th grade standards that are vital to understanding sixth grade math concepts. To receive full credit, students need to document their thinking in their Math Learning Log. If your child scores below a 70%, they are assigned an AMPLIFIER to complete and then they are given a chance to complete a DO OVER. Students are able to receive full credit if they complete all parts of the assignment and receive a &0% or better.
TenMarks also lists PERSONAL ASSIGNMENTS. These assignments are based on your child's benchmark scores. The purpose of these lessons are to help build bridges and fill gaps in prior learning. While I have not assigned any PERSONAL WORK, I strongly recommend students to work through these assignments at their own pace (due dates can be disregarded). On nights when your child does not have any homework in Math, they should be working on these tasks!
We are doing a exploration on water, introducing some chemistry concepts! On Thursday we set up an experiment freezing water and will be discussing the idea of expansion.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PUT OUR OUTDOOR SCIENCE EDUCATION MEETING ON YOUR CALENDAR . . . THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 AT 7:00 IN ROOM 106.
