Classroom Updates
Language Arts
We have continued reading Boy of the Painted Cave, and we are learning more about the character Tao. The students are really enjoying this story and keep wondering what is going to happen next. We complete assorted assignments in class as we read through the novel. All of this class work is turned in weekly, scored, and returned. The graded papers are then returned to the students' individual Reading Log Binders that we keep in class. Any student that is missing work, has one week past the Friday due date to complete and turn in the missing work. That means that Friday, September 11th is the last day that I will take papers that were due on Friday, September 4th. And Friday 18th is the last day that I will accept papers that were due on Friday 11th, and so on. This is classwork and all papers should be turned in as it is finished up. It should be a rare occasion that a child takes a class assignment home to complete.
We just completed our first of ten Latin and Greek Root sets. The students had a fun time thinking of words and sorting roots. The quiz was quick and the students did a fantastic job.
We are continuing with our review of grammar. We have reviewed nouns and verbs. Next week we will review prepositions, and we will start to learn about subjects and predicates. Next Thursday there will be a quiz on nouns (common and proper) and verbs (action and being).
In writing we are just getting started on writing responses to literature. In class we have practiced writing both a summary paragraph and an analysis paragraph. Students will begin turning in a two-paragraph written responses to literature (most) every Tuesday starting on Tuesday, September 22. We will continue reviewing this next week. All instructions can be found in your child's homework section of their language arts binder.
Social Studies
I was very, very pleased with the results of our chapter one test: Investigating the Past. Overall the students did an exceptional job studying and preparing for the test. Reading for information is a skill that we continue practicing all year. Test corrections were due today, and I am happy to see that students took advantage of this opportunity. Please note that when your child does test corrections they need to write out the complete question and the one correct answer on binder paper. The binder paper needs to be attached to the original test and resubmitted.
We have started chapter two: Early Hominids and next week the students will be analyzing "fossils" and "artifacts" to learn more about the five hominid groups. We will not have a test on chapter two.
Math
Students are completing their fifth grade benchmark reviews. As your child will tell you, it is long and complicated. Students must think deeply! Once tests are completed, I will be able to assign personal work to help build fluency in math skills learned last year. Students will be expected to work through this play list on a regular basis both as classwork and for homework!
Science
We continue to work on our theme of Sustainability. We revisited the water cycle and students are completing their "What's Going on in my Neighborhood?" slide examining water conservation. Students should now be able to view classmates' posts when they go into google drive and open up "Shared With Me".
