RELAY FOR LIFE INFO
Dear 6th Grade Families,
For many years, Charter School of Morgan Hill has been actively involved in the Relay For Life of Morgan Hill. The past 2 years, the 6th grade class took on forming a team for the Relay as a community service project. This year's event is May 14-15, 2016, and teams are getting started now to organize their teams and plan for events leading up to Relay For Life.
Every year, our community loses one or more to cancer, and every year we have someone battling it. This past year we have lost a beloved Charter parent, and tragically, a student. And the two years before saw the loss of two other beloved parents of students that attend this school. Cancer affects all of us.
What is Relay For Life?
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a worldwide movement in which communities gather to CELEBRATE those who have or are battling cancer, REMEMBER those lost to cancer, and FIGHT BACK through prevention awareness, and fundraising for support for patients and their families, and research to treat and prevent cancer.
Relay For Life is a 24 hour event, because cancer never rests, where teams take turns walking on a track. It is not an athletic event - it is a community event.
How do the students participate?
Here are a few of the ways students can participate in this event as part of our 6th grade team:
• sign up on the website as a team participant- go to www.relayforlife.org/morganhillca
click on participate and sign up on CHARTER'S CHEETAHS - by signing up we are asking that you commit to a minimum of 2 hours fundraising to support this event)
• sign up to walk for 1 hour during the event (‘Volunteer Spot’ sign-up link coming soon)
• sign up to work in the booth during the event- handing out information, selling items or raffle tickets, etc- depending on what students decide (‘Volunteer Spot’ sign-up link coming soon)
• sign up at school to join the ‘planning team’ - booth decorations, t-shirt design, and much more
• sign up at school to join the ‘luminaria decorating team’ - collect orders for luminaria’s to be displayed at the event, and decorate them in honor of, or in remembrance of, or in celebration of someone affected by cancer.
From the Charter School educators and the Relay For Life of Morgan Hill Planning committee; we do not want this to be a burden on families, so we are aiming to have many team fundraising opportunities, such as Give Back Nights at restaurants, popcorn sales, and other ideas generated by the students. Lots more information to follow.
