CLassroom Updates
SPANISH
Hola Padres,
We have finished our South American posters and our presentations. The students did a great job! We are now working on sentence structure in Spanish with simple objects, verbs, and adjectives. Students rely too much on Google Translate and I'm trying to get them away from that. An example of what I'm talking about is when they want to say: Me gusta comer marsicos en la playa. (I like to eat seafood by the beach). If they can't translate that on their own they need to modify what they want to say to something they do know. Ex: Yo como pez en la casa. I eat fish at home. Even though it is a much simpler sentence, they used words that they already know and didn't have to use a computer to translate for them. We will be working on adding the adjectives after the objects. This is a little different for them since in English the adjective comes before the object. Ex. red ball - pelota roja.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.
Regards,
Sra. Hossain
MATH
Students spent time exploring the computer tools they will be using to take the Smarter Balanced test mid April. They were able to go through a training protocol. Practice tests are available at caaspp.org
We continue to play the Stock Market Game. Students are being given twenty minutes, three times a week to check their stocks, buy, sell or research possible options. D & W Investments is in the lead at this point in time . . . however, we did drop from 2nd overall place to eighth this week!
A quiz was taken today reinforcing homework problems this week. They will be going home on Monday. Corrections and parent signatures should be turned in by Wednesday.

Language Arts
We just finished our classroom novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and we are planning for our socratic seminar on Monday, March 2. the students have all been working on getting prepared with their thoughts and evidence. The questions and answers are due on Monday.
We just finished with our 4th literature circle meeting, and I am very pleased to see how much the students have grown as thoughtful readers and how well they can articulate their thinking. The 5th and final literature circle meeting will be on Tuesday, March 3. After the final discussion, the students will begin working on their group project to present their book and all that the learned to the class. I look forward to seeing what projects the students will begin working on.
Many students entered the Pets Add Life poetry contest sponsored by PAL. I'm crossing my fingers that we have a winner from our class! I'll keep you posted.
Social Studies
We have left ancient India and have headed into learning about ancient China. We have started with studying the geography of ancient China and looking at their five distinct regions. The students are putting together poster presentations that include a relief map of China as well as climate and vegetation information. As we have learned in all of our social studies - the geography of the land makes a direct connection to where and how early civilizations developed.
Below are a few of our Hinduism acrostic poems filled with information!

We are also looking forward to our field trip next Wednesday to revisit ancient Egypt at the Rosicrucian museum. I am still missing a handful of permission forms. If you have not signed one, please do so asap.
Thank you, Mrs. Huffman for hanging up our Egyptian masks. They look awesome!
