RELAY FOR LIFE FUND RAISER - WE NEED YOUR HELP!
On Friday, March 11th we will be holding a healthy snack and popcorn sales to raise money for our Relay for Life team. The financial planning team is asking sixth graders to bring in healthy muffins or homemade granola that we will sell at recess for $1.00. One of CSMH's parents is donating popcorn and kettle corn from her movie theater for us to sell!
You can help by visiting Volunteer Spot and signing up to bring in a dozen muffins or homemade granola (Abby will give her family recipe to anybody who signe up to make the granola! Please visit:

Classroom Updates
AGRICULTURE
One of the Next Generation Science Standards we are working on in Ag. Science is to construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms. Students came up with research questions about plants, developed a hypothesis, identified the independent and dependent variables and set up and experiment to help them construct an argument. They are using carrots, lettuce or radishes as their organism. The genetic factors they’ve identified include things like color, size, shape and taste. The environmental factors include type of soil, amount, type and color of water, air, amount and the intensity of sun, pollutants in the air, water or soil and things like humidity. Each of your students has designed their own experiment or is working with a partner who has a similar research question. Several students are interested in learning how substances in the water are going to affect the plants, so they are using colored water, sugar water, electrolyte, salt, baking soda and baking powder water. Some students are interested in what happens to plants when different types of soils are used or things are added to the soil such as color, salt and organic matter. They are really excited about their experiments, so take some time to ask your students about this. This is a chance for them to delve into uncertainty and be scientists. The experiments will end mid-April with students drawing conclusions from their results.

Language Arts
We have continued working with our literature circle groups. Meetings #4 and #5 will be next week. It is imperative that students complete their reading at home and come to clas prepared to discuss and having completed their role assignment.
Next week we start building our online magazine that will be a place holder for all of the wonderful informational essays that the students wrote. In addition to this, they will be adding art work, games, and puzzles. The students will be working in groups under student editors to determine content and design, and to oversee the production of this work. Stay tuned!

MATH
Test on Monday! Students received a study packet last week to help them review concepts that will be covered on the exam. In addition to the test on Monday, students will be taking the yearly MARS exam on Tuesday and Thursday.
SCIENCE
We continue to work on building weather understanding. Students have been introduced to the idea of density. We participated in a layering of liquids experiment today showing that the more salt content in a liquid the more dense.
