We Love to REad - A Donor's Choose Project
As soon as we finish reading Boy of the Painted Cave, we will begin our first literature circles of the year. A literature circle is similar to a small book club, where the students read a selected novel with four other classmates. They will be meeting in class twice a week to discuss the books.
I hope to add a few new titles to our literature circle book selections this year. To help us get these new titles I have set up a Donors Choose project page. All of the new titles are wonderful stories told in first person. This is a complement to our current reading and writing of first-person. A few of the titles are even told from multiple character's first-person accounts.
If you can help, please visit My project page by CLICKING HERE. Also, if you give to my classroom by October 15 your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code SPARK on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100).
Thank you so much for your support!

Help! Drivers needed for Upcoming Field Trip to see the Cay
We are very much looking forward to seeing the dramatic production of the Cay. The students are enjoying this story of 11 year-old Phillip, a young boy that has become shipwrecked. This is a classic story that is set during World War II.
Students in section 6-2 will be leaving school @ 8:30 and returning @ 11:15. Currently I have car space for only 22 students of the 30.
Student in section 6-1 will be leaving school @ 10:00 and returning @ 12:45. Currently I have car space for 29 students of the 30.
Please email [email protected], if you can help out.

Classroom Updates
MATH
We are coming to the end of chapter 1 in our CPM book and we will be having a chapter test next Thursday. Students should review their homework and be confident with the vocabulary sheet that comes home Tuesday. All these terms have been discussed and practiced and students should be able to explain their meaning and give an example.
On Wednesday students were introduced to Dan Myers 3 Act Math. They worked on a proportional relationship problem called "Nana's Lemonade". This activity provided a great discussion about investigative questions vs. a question that Siri could answer!
We will be starting our CAMP and MATH project next week. Students came up with driving questions. They were given the choice of picking a classmate to work with or picking the driving question they will be working on for the next two weeks. Two thirds of the kids were more eager to choose WHO they would work with than on WHAT they would work on (driving question)!
Language Arts
Our story of Tao and Boy of the Painted Cave is coming to an end. The students have loved this story of how Tao realizes his dream. We will start next week on completing a project that answers the question, how does Boy of the Painted Cave fit the monomyth of the hero's journey? The students in-class project will be completed in time for Fall exhibition.
Social Studies
We just wrapped up chapter four, the Rise of the Sumerian City-States, and the students took their chapter test on Thursday. We spent a lot of class time reading, discussing, exploring, watching a presentation, working in groups, making small group presentations, and delving deep into the problems and solutions that led to the development of the first city-states in Mesopotamia.
