Homework club:
Just a friendly reminder that Homework Club ends at 3:25. We schedule meetings after this time slot with other teachers and parents and are unable to supervise students on campus after Homework Club. The purpose of this after school meeting time is to give students a time to jump start the homework process. Please be prompt in picking up your child.
Additionally, younger siblings that are attending homework club need to have something to do during this time, even if it is to sit and read silently.

The information that is collected (in an anonymous manner) is used to be studied and influence future programs. Please read the following information carefully, and if you choose to have your child opt out of the data collection, please print, sign, and return the form.
Classroom Updates
Math:
We came back from camp and are working on formulating a project that deals with CAMP and MATH. We are in the process of formulating driving questions. Please stay tuned as our project takes on fruition.
In class we continue to work through Chapter 1 of our CPM texts. The focus has been on representing data. Students have worked with pennies and frogs, discussing ways to organize and portray data that is easy to read and understand. We have also been using Khan Academy to review the concept of LCM (least common multiple). An assignment in TenMarks is due on Saturday. Many students have already completed this project as I assigned it prior to camp. On October 11th there is a TenMarks assignment due on GCF (Greatest Common Factors/Divisors). We will be discussing this concept next week>

Language Arts:
We have continued read Boy of the Painted Cave and we have begun to look at Tao fits into the theme of the Hero's Journey. As we finish the book, we will be working on a project that will depict the correlation of the monomyth and our class novel.
We set up our Literature Response Journals also known as LRJs. The first entry is due next Thursday, Oct. 9th. All of the guidelines are inside the front pages of their new comprehension book labeled, Literature Response Journal. This week we did a practice entry in class on a chapter from Boy of the Painted Cave. A new journal entry will be due each Friday. These entries are to be written on out-of-school reading (think Red Hot Reader reading). The purpose is to stop and think critically about our reading and then to be able to articulate and communicate those thoughts with others.
I have scheduled our next field trip to see a drama production of the novel, The Cay by Theodore Taylor. I have begun reading this classic aloud to the students in class. This story will also be connected to our overarching theme of The Hero's Journey.
The field trip is scheduled for Thursday Oct. 30, 2014. California Theater Works was unable to accommodate bout classes at the same time, so we will be split. Class 6-2 will depart school at 8:30 and return to school at 11:30. Class 6-1 will depart school at 10:00 and return to school at 12:45.
All students need to return the permission slip that was send home today with the students.
If you can drive and chaperon please send me an email at [email protected]. Please let me know which section (6-1 or 6-2) you can help with and how many students you can drive. Also, please fill out the bottom section of the permission slip and return to school ASAP. All necessary paperwork needs to be current and on file in the front office. I have eight chaperon tickets for each production.

Social Studies:
This last week we explored the rise of the Sumerian City-States. We will be having a test on Chapter 4 next Wednesday, October 8. Student notebook pages and study guides for Chapter Four will also be due on Wednesday. We have already completed the notebook pages in class, and we will be working on the study guide next Monday and Tuesday in class. With this chapter, the students took on the role of a Sumerian and had to find ways to deal with different problems that the real Sumerians faced in 3,500 B.C.E. They came up with some clever solutions!
