Math
Ratios were introduced this week. We explored this concept using CPM and Khan Academy. We will continue to work with this idea and their relationship with fractions, decimals and percents.
A quiz was given today. Scores are posted in Jupiter Grades. Parent signatures and corrections will be due next Wednesday. We will continue practicing adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. See if your child can explain -(-6) or even -(-(-6))!
A TenMarks assessment has been assigned to your child. They have until next Saturday to complete the questions. A "playlist" will be assigned once the assessment is complete to help reinforce/challenge skills.
In two weeks students will start playing the Stock Market Game. This is an online program where students will work in groups buying and selling stocks. Ms. Daprile has been doing some initial research work with students to better understand this concept. If you would like to to learn more about this program, visit www.stockmarketgame.org

Language Arts
In language arts we have continued reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. We are learning bits and pieces about about the secrets of NIMH.
We have also started a new Latin and Greek root unit. After our next assessment on this packet of 10 roots, we will then have a review quiz were I will pull questions from all 40 roots covered so far. The students should continue to keep their flashcards and raps handy and review them from time to time.
Next Tuesday, the sixth graders will be participating in a nationwide writing project. I do not have all of the details, but from what I have learned so far this is an exciting opportunity to have our students' writing analyzed and compared to other sixth graders across the USA. While I have assured the students that this does not count for a grade or a score anywhere - I would like them to all do their best. The feedback to me as a teacher will be very invaluable.
Social Studies
The students took the chapter 13 test on Thursday and they will be returned to them next week.
On Monday morning we have a couple of docents visiting the sixth grade to share with us the Art of Ancient Civilizations. This is a two part in-house "field-trip". The second half will take place on Friday morning.
The students have been very excited to have started on a research project! We are combining social studies, language arts, and math to learn about and participate in The Stock Market Game. Currently the students are busy researching and becoming familiar with a number of financial terms. Next week the students (working in groups) will present their concept to the class. Any conversations you can have at home will help them grasp this new financial literacy that we are incorporating into our day. The first week of February the students will begin (in groups) investing $100,000 via a real time simulation.
