Language Arts
We have started our first Literature Circles of the school year. We hold one Literature Circle each trimester and this first one has a learning curve of understanding that the children have done a great job with. It is really important to stay on top of the schedule.
A literature circle is similar to a small book club where each child is part of a group. Each member is reading the same book. There are 4 - 6 students in each group. The books are to be read at home, and on meeting days the students need to come to school ready to discuss their reading. The meeting is led by the Discussion Director and all students share out their work. There are six different Literature Circle roles and the roles are rotated for each meeting. To help all students be prepared for their meetings, they also have a Literature Circle paper that corresponds to their chosen job. This paper is to be completed at home before each meeting. To have a really good book discussion, each student needs to be fully prepared.
Literature Circle Meeting Schedule:
Friday, October 15
Tuesday, October 20
Friday, October 23
Tuesday, November 3
Friday, November 6
A copy of the Literature Circle Roll sheet can be found under the Language Arts Homework tab.
Social Studies
This week we have taken on the role of Sumerians establishing the very first city-states in the Mesopotamian Valley. Our challenge was to plan a way to control our water supply so that we could havest our crops twice a year. We also had to design a defense system as neighboring city-states have begun attacks.
Working in groups, the students will be designing real estate flyers enticing other Sumerians to come and live in their city-state. They will be highlighting all the great benefits of their city-states location.
