November Conference Sign Up
Because Ms. Daprile and Ms. Williams would like to meet with all sixth grade parents this first reporting trimester, we will be starting conferences early. We have set aside times the week of November 9th (after school hours) and the week of November 16th, which is the regular minimum day conferencing week. We are using Volunteer Spot to arrange appointments. Please click on the link above and follow the directions to sign up for your sixth grader's conference!

Our Intel Museum Was a Success . . .
Thanks to all our parent drivers and chaperons! We truly appreciate your time and gasoline getting us there and back safely!
Auction Creation
Our ceramic dinnerware is getting glazed and then fired next week. The students have done a beautiful job! Once fired the plates will be burgundy, gold, reddish orange, and hunter green. The kids can hardly wait to see the final product!
Math
A test on positive and negative integers will be on THURSDAY, October 8th!
The test will cover adding and subtracting integers, comparing their values using the inequality sign, and absolute value. Students will also be expected to solve problems that use positive and negative numbers in real life. This might include being overdraft in a banking situation, swimming below sea level, etc.
Science
Students worked on finishing up an experiment on freezing water and looked at the molecular structure to see if we could figure out why it expands when frozen. We also looked at the affect of water on carbon and made predictions about the time it takes to dissolve a bigger "carbonate rock" to smaller pieces. Alka Seltzer made a lot of money off our class this week . . . !!!

Classroom Updates
Language Arts
We have continued with Boy of the Painted Cave. We will be finishing up our first classroom novel next week. The students have really enjoyed this book! After we conclude this book the students will be preparing for and participating in a Socratic seminar. This is an excellent way for the students to articulate their thoughts and show their learning. More about this next week :)
We are also getting ready to start our first literature circles - this is similar to the Literature Tribes that they had last year with a few differences.
There will be a grammar quiz next Tues. Oct. 6 on nouns, verbs, and prepostions.
Social Studies
The students completed their chapter three tests and on first glance they did an excellent job. We have learned of the huge impact the development of agriculture had on early civilizations. Nest we will be looking at the rise of Sumerian city-states.
