Classroom Updates
It has been a busy week in Room #5!
We were able to set up the classroom to depict the ancient ruins of Mohenjodaro and took on the roles of archaeologist and excavated the ruins. We climbed over walls and dug through dirt, we moved bricks, and pieced together broken artifacts. Each clue that we found and examined helped us understand the life of this ancient culture. Mohenjodaro was a thriving civilization of 50,000 people from 2700 B.C.E. to 1900 B.C.E, but the ruins were not discovered until 1922.
The students really enjoyed role-playing throughout this activity. We will be having a test on chapter 14: Unlocking the Secrets of Mohenjodaro on Friday, March 5.
Before break we finished reading our class novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. The Friday before break we were able to view the animated version of this book. As the students discovered, the movie titled The Secrets of NIMH is quite different from the book!
We also held our Socratic seminar that last week before break. The students impressed me with their deep thoughts and connections. They really enjoy having this opportunity to discuss and share their thoughts. I love the way they continue to stretch their thinking and find evidence to support their ideas.
This week we completed our informational writings. Essays were due today, Friday, 26th. Our next step is to take on a technology component and create a class blog! This will be an online "magazine" full of their writings, pictures, games, and other fun facts that the student editors, writers, artists, and publishers create. Stay tuned for this publication!
We have started our second Literature Circle. Our first meeting was today and the following four meetings are on:
- Tuesday, March 1
- Friday, March 4
- Tuesday, March 8
- Friday, March 11
It is imperative that students complete the assigned reading at home and come to class prepared to discuss with their completed paperwork.
Proportional relationships were worked with this week in math class. Students were able to practice this today designing an Iditarod doghouse. After watching a video and learning about the importance of a doghouse to a musher, students worked individually or in a group to design a doghouse for a husky.
